Trump says Strait of Hormuz will become US territory

Donald Trump has declared he will soon rename the Strait of Hormuz a territory of the United States, according to the Independent. The announcement comes amid escalating tensions with Iran, which has vowed to enforce a blockade of the waterway.
GB News reports Iran has told Trump to "accept defeat" over the threatened closure. The Independent carries warnings that US oil reserves have fallen to levels where the storage caverns themselves could be damaged. Trump has reportedly blamed the Iran conflict, along with inflation concerns, on others in what the Independent describes as "a new level" of finger-pointing.
The Strait sits between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. No US administration has previously claimed sovereignty over international waters in this manner. The declaration raises immediate questions about enforcement - whether Trump means a symbolic renaming, a claim under international law, or something else entirely. Iran controls the northern shore; Oman the southern. Both would presumably have views.
What to watch: whether any formal claim is filed, how the Navy interprets the instruction, and whether Iran's blockade threat materialises. If oil shipments stop, the market will answer faster than any diplomat.
