Reform UK announces ban on full-face coverings in public

Reform UK has announced it would ban full-face coverings in public, including burkas and balaclavas. The party says the policy applies to religious garments and secular face coverings alike.

Nigel Farage confirmed the position across multiple outlets. The Mirror reports the announcement was designed to distract from questions over party donations. The Greens accused Farage of racism. GB News and the Express carried the policy without that framing.

The category is worth watching. A ban on full-face coverings is not new to Europe - the question is always which coverings the law names and whether it applies one rule or two. France passed such a law in the early part of the last decade. Belgium, Austria and Denmark followed. Britain has debated the question before but never legislated. The test of any such law is whether it applies the same prohibition to a balaclava at a protest and a niqab on the high street, or whether the enforcement splits by context in practice.

Reform is polling strongly enough that this is no longer a fringe position. Whether it reaches a manifesto, and whether the language holds to one rule applied equally, will tell the reader which tradition the party is working in.
