Trump envoys head to Moscow as air truce violated

Envoys dispatched by Donald Trump have arrived in Moscow ahead of Ukraine talks, the BBC and the Independent report. The meetings precede negotiations aimed at ending the war that has run since Russia's invasion.

The Independent reports that Moscow has violated President Zelensky's proposed air truce even as the American delegation travels. The breach suggests the distance between a ceasefire on paper and compliance in practice - a pattern familiar from previous attempts to pause the conflict.

The framing matters. These are Trump's envoys, not the State Department's. That signals a personalised diplomacy, distinct from the institutional channels that carried the previous administration's Ukraine policy. Whether that improves the chances of a deal or simply moves the theatre from Kyiv and Brussels to Mar-a-Lago is the open question. A truce that one side is already ignoring before the other side's negotiators land is not a promising start.

What to watch: whether the talks produce a proposal both sides can sell domestically, and whether any ceasefire includes verification that survives first contact with the front line. Russia's record on implementation is longer than most wars.
