The Independent's "no breakthrough" suggests Putin heard the pitch and declined to move. Whether that is because the offer was insufficient or because he sees no reason to stop while Ukraine's position weakens is the question neither outlet answers.

Kushner's presence is the detail worth watching. He brokered the Abraham Accords under the first Trump administration - recognition deals between Israel and Gulf states that bypassed the Palestinians. The method was transactional: offer something concrete, sideline the ideological dispute, move fast. Whether that model applies to a land war in Europe is untested. Ukraine is not the UAE, and Russia is not normalising with anyone. The risk is that a deal Kyiv cannot accept gets written in Moscow and presented in Kyiv as progress.
