Third night of disorder in Thetford as police make arrests over asylum protests

A third consecutive night of unrest in Thetford, Norfolk, has led to multiple arrests as protests over asylum seeker housing continue. The Daily Mail reports police deployed pepper spray during the disorder, with one woman in a wheelchair caught in the spray while passing through the area. Novara Media says asylum seekers have been driven from their homes by the protests.

The disturbances come as Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch faces warnings from multiple quarters over her pledge to end social housing allocations to foreign nationals. The Independent reports she has been cautioned against inflaming the situation, while Labour's border minister told GB News the policy is "dangerous and attention seeking". The Guardian describes the plan as "divisive".

The Conservative position puts a category question on the table that neither side wants to answer plainly. Social housing exists because the market undersupplies homes the lowest earners can afford - a scarcity the state acknowledges by building them. When demand exceeds supply, rationing follows. The question is not whether to ration but on what basis: time waiting, local connection, citizenship, need. Every rationing rule privileges one claim over another. The argument is which claim should win, not whether the question is divisive - scarcity makes it divisive by definition.

The Conservatives have also written to every Tory-controlled council ordering rapid implementation of single-sex facility guidance, a move the Mail reports Left-wing councils plan to defy. GB News pressed a senior Conservative on whether the party can be trusted on the housing pledge given past delivery.
