Burnham calls West Bank sanctions British leadership as backlash intensifies

The Prime Minister has described the government's trade restrictions on Israeli West Bank settlements as Britain showing "leadership on world stage", as controversy over the measures enters its third day.

The Guardian reports that senior UK rabbis have come out in support of the sanctions, while The Independent says a majority of Britons back the move according to polling. The Express calls Burnham "tone deaf" and accuses him of "completely ignoring threats to Britain". Robert Jenrick, speaking to GB News, accuses Labour of allowing "sectarian politics" to dictate foreign policy and calls the decision "dangerous".

The machinery here is the gap between foreign policy and domestic electoral calculation. Sanctions are an instrument of statecraft - they succeed or fail on whether they change behaviour abroad. The question the Opposition is raising, however crudely, is whether this decision advances British interests or services a domestic constituency ahead of a by-election in a seat with a large Muslim population. The test of any sanction is: does it move the needle, or does it move the vote?

The answer arrives in two places. First, whether Israel alters settlement policy - the stated aim. Second, whether the measure costs Britain anything material in intelligence cooperation, trade, or diplomatic capital with allies who disagree. Foreign Secretary Miliband insists intelligence sharing with Israel will not be affected. That claim will be tested in the coming months.
