Russia warns UK over drone supply as Kremlin sacks economist who queried war costs
Crossbencher Newsdesk

Russia has issued a warning to the United Kingdom over the supply of drones to Ukraine, according to the BBC and the Independent. The threat follows what the Independent describes as 'record attacks' by Kyiv using British equipment.
Separately, the Independent reports that the Kremlin has fired a top economist after the official warned that Russia is 'falling behind' due to the costs of the Ukraine war. The dismissal isn't attributed to a named source in the headline cluster, but the timing is clear: the warning preceded the sacking.

The pattern is older than this war. Authoritarian states don't debate the costs of policy - they remove the people who count them. The economist's offence was arithmetic in a system where loyalty outranks solvency. That machinery has survived longer wars than this one.
Meanwhile, the UK continues to supply equipment while avoiding direct combat - the same posture every NATO member holds. Russia's warnings are aimed at testing where that line sits. The line hasn't moved yet, but the warnings keep coming because the purpose isn't to persuade but to establish a record for later.

Watch whether the sacked economist resurfaces, and whether the UK changes its supply policy in response to the threats. The first will tell you how deep the Russian state's tolerance for internal dissent runs. The second will tell you whether the warnings carry weight or are theatre.
