Rescue services are searching for passengers after a ferry capsized off northern Cyprus, local media report.

The Independent says the vessel had more than two hundred and sixty people aboard when it went down and that a rescue operation is under way. BBC reporting puts the number aboard at about two hundred and seventy, citing local sources. Both outlets focus on the ongoing search and the efforts to recover survivors from the water.

The wider point is how quickly maritime incidents become international crises when they happen near contested or divided waters. Northern Cyprus lies outside the internationally recognised administration on the island, which can complicate coordination between authorities, aid ships and foreign consular teams. That friction can slow rescue and repatriation efforts, and makes rapid, clear arrangements for search-and-rescue cooperation the most urgent policy need in the hours after such a disaster.

What to watch: statements from rescue coordinators, which authorities take the lead in the operation, and whether neighbouring states offer assistance or request access for their consular teams.
