Reform drops to third as Tory recovery continues in new poll

Nigel Farage's Reform UK has fallen to third place in a new poll, with the Conservatives moving back ahead as Labour holds the lead. GB News and the Daily Express both carry the figures, marking a reversal from the summer when Reform briefly edged past the Tories in some surveys.

The polling snapshot matters less than the trend. Reform's high-water mark came in the weeks after the general election, when the party's vote share and the Tories' collapse suggested a realignment on the right. That moment appears to have passed, at least for now. The Conservatives have recovered ground without a leader or a platform - which tells you the recovery is about Reform's ceiling, not Tory appeal.

The house angle: we have seen this cycle before, with UKIP. A challenger party on the right rises when the Conservatives look like managed liberals; it falls when the Tories remember how to speak to their own voters, or when the challenger's coalition - pensioners, left-behind towns, southern protest votes - proves too diverse to hold. Farage's task is the one UKIP never solved: turning a protest movement into a governing party that people can imagine in office. The polls suggest he hasn't solved it either.

What to watch: whether Reform's slide continues, or whether it stabilises at a floor that still makes it kingmaker in a hung parliament. The Tories' recovery is real, but it isn't yet a revival. Both could still be true at the next election.
