Record-breaking boat crossing raises operational questions

A single small boat carrying what multiple outlets report as a record number of migrants crossed the Channel yesterday. The Mirror, Sun and Express all carry the same figure for the number aboard.

Nigel Farage described the crossing as a national security emergency. The government hasn't yet commented on the operational capacity question the crossing raises - how a boat of that size evaded interception, and what it implies about the scale of vessels now attempting the route.

The crossing comes as the Prime Minister has promised tougher enforcement on smuggling networks and a new bilateral deal with France. The last such deal, agreed under the previous government, committed the UK to further payments for French coastal patrols. The number of crossings fell briefly, then resumed at previous levels.

Every boat that makes the crossing undetected is a failure of the detection and interception architecture on both sides of the water. The size of this one suggests either a step change in smuggler capability or a gap in the patrol grid wide enough to let a vessel of unusual size through.

What to watch: whether the government classifies this as an anomaly or the new baseline, and whether French patrols were aware of the boat before it reached British waters. The operational debrief will tell us which.
