The Daily Mail reports Putin smirked during the exchange; the Independent notes he issued the warning in response to claims he would target UK sites over their support for Kyiv.

The framing is the story. Russia has struck NATO-supplied weapons inside Ukraine for three years - the escalation Putin now trails is hitting the supply chain before it crosses the border. British defence contractors operate under the same legal protection as any other UK business; an attack on a factory in Warwickshire would be an attack on Britain. Putin's answer leaves that boundary deliberately unclear, trading on the gap between a threat and an act.

The tactic is not new - ambiguity is a weapon when the other side's red lines are uncertain.
