El-Sayed ran on a platform to the left of the party mainstream. His victory marks another instance of the progressive wing outperforming the Democratic establishment's chosen candidates in state-level races - a pattern that has recurred since the Sanders presidential campaigns reshaped the party's internal dynamics.

Michigan is a swing state that voted for Trump in the general election before returning to Biden. The state's Democratic primary has become a test of which faction of the party can mobilise its base.
