Peace talks in Istanbul rich in symbolism, fundamental gaps remain

The BBC reports that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are rich in symbolism but that fundamental differences remain. The Independent says President Zelensky predicts another winter at war despite what it calls substantive talks with Trump envoys.

The word "substantive" is doing work here. Talks in Istanbul have happened before - the city hosted negotiations in the early weeks of the war. Those talks produced a draft treaty and then collapsed. The pattern since has been: contact, choreography, and then the same gaps reappearing. Russia wants territorial concessions and limits on Ukrainian sovereignty. Ukraine wants its borders back and security guarantees the West can deliver. Neither side has moved.

The involvement of American envoys suggests the Trump administration is testing whether it can broker what Biden could not. But the arithmetic has not changed. Russia holds ground it will not surrender without being forced. Ukraine cannot force it without weapons and political cover the West may no longer supply at the necessary scale. The talks are real; so is the winter Zelensky is planning for.

The next test is whether any proposal gets written down and whether either side commits to a date. Until then, this is the same war with different envoys watching.
