A large dinghy carrying migrants caught fire in the English Channel, prompting a joint rescue operation by British and French coastguards. The Mirror reports the boat capsized with those aboard, while the Daily Mail describes the vessel as a "mega-dinghy" that caught fire during the crossing.

The Daily Express carries footage of migrants being returned to France following the incident. GB News reports that Lee Anderson was blocked by French police "within minutes" of arrival while attempting to report on the migrant crisis, describing officers as "armed to the teeth".

The machinery here is the thing worth watching. A rescue operation that ends with return to France is not a failure of the process - it is the process working exactly as designed. The question the country keeps asking is whether that design serves the national interest or simply moves the problem around the Channel in both directions. When a vessel catches fire, the coastguard responds; when the rescued are returned, the crossing resumes. The cycle is the policy.

What to watch: whether the Home Office publishes updated crossing figures for the year to date, and whether the joint patrols announced in recent agreements between London and Paris show any sustained reduction in attempted crossings. The test of any agreement is the number that follows, not the communiqué that precedes it.
