Nato fighter jets have shot down a suspected Russian kamikaze drone after it entered alliance airspace over eastern Europe. The Daily Mail reports the incident occurred over Latvia, while The Independent places it in Romanian airspace - the discrepancy itself is material, given both countries border different parts of the alliance's eastern flank.

The drone was identified as hostile and intercepted by Nato quick reaction alert aircraft. Both outlets describe it as a suspected Russian unmanned aerial vehicle, though neither confirms whether it was armed or its intended target. The incident follows a pattern of airspace violations along Nato's eastern border since the war in Ukraine began.

The machinery matters here. Nato operates under collective defence - an armed attack against one member is an attack against all. But a stray or deliberate drone in peacetime airspace sits in a grey zone the treaty wasn't written for. Alliance jets have standing rules of engagement for intercepts; shooting down an unmanned vehicle is a lower threshold than returning fire on a manned aircraft, but it's still kinetic force applied to what is, on paper, Russian state property.

What to watch: whether Moscow acknowledges the drone as theirs, and whether Nato releases radar tracks or wreckage analysis. If neither happens, the question remains open - and the next one matters more.
