Migrant paraglides into Ceuta and dies as Spain-Italy row erupts over border controls
Crossbencher Newsdesk

A man has died attempting to paraglide from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, according to the Independent and the Daily Mail. The Mail reports fears that another such attempt has been planned.
The incident comes as Italy's foreign minister has criticised Spain's response to what GB News describes as a "Schengen border crisis", calling it "disproportionate" and warning over "jihadist migrants". The diplomatic row exposes a fracture within the European Union over how member states police external borders that sit within the Schengen Area.

Ceuta and Melilla are Spanish territory on the North African coast - cities that have been Spanish since the early modern period but sit geographically in Morocco. They are the EU's only land borders with Africa, and the pressure points where migration policy, national sovereignty, and treaty obligation meet. When Spain tightens controls, it affects movement across the entire Schengen zone; when it doesn't, other member states complain that the external border is porous. The Italy-Spain argument is the same argument the bloc has had for a decade, in a new dialect.
The paragliding route isn't new - it has been attempted before from the Moroccan coast into Ceuta - but a fatality raises the stakes. If further attempts are planned, as the Mail reports, it suggests the land and sea routes are being supplemented by air, however rudimentary. That's a tactical shift, not just a tragedy.
What to watch: whether Spain responds with new air surveillance or physical barriers, and whether the EU moves to coordinate external border policy or continues to leave member states to argue in public.
