Masked protesters block Dover port in apparent anti-migration demonstration

Masked men blocked traffic to the Port of Dover in what appears to be an anti-immigration protest. The Independent and the Mirror both carry the story, with the Mirror running a column from a Dover resident arguing that intimidating ordinary people is the last thing the town needs.

The port handles the majority of roll-on roll-off freight traffic between Britain and the continent. Blocking it disrupts not only holiday traffic but the supply chains that move food, medicine and components through Dover every day. The protesters' target was symbolic - Dover is where small boats cross the Channel and where the question of control over borders is most visible - but the method hits the people least responsible for the policy.

Protest is a democratic right. Blocking infrastructure used by the public tests the boundary between expression and coercion. The line has always been contested - suffragettes chained themselves to railings, the poll tax riots turned violent, Extinction Rebellion glued themselves to roads - but the question remains the same: does the cause justify imposing costs on people who had no say in creating the grievance. The port blockade forces that question again.
