Labour has selected Sagal Abdi-Wali, a Somali refugee and leader of Camden Council, to contest the Holborn and St Pancras by-election.

The Mirror and GB News report the selection. The seat was held by Keir Starmer until he resigned it to focus on his role as Prime Minister - an unusual move that has triggered a by-election in one of Labour's safest constituencies. Abdi-Wali arrived in Britain as a refugee and rose through local government; she has led Camden Council since last year.

The selection is a test of the party's standing in its own heartland. Holborn and St Pancras returned Labour majorities in excess of twenty thousand votes at recent elections, but the seat includes significant Muslim and left-wing populations who have been critical of the government's foreign policy. Independent and Green candidates have made inroads in similar seats where Labour's vote fractured over Gaza and domestic priorities. The party will be watching turnout as much as the margin.

What to watch: the candidate list when nominations close, and whether the result holds or narrows Labour's majority. A comfortable win reaffirms the party's grip on its urban base; a squeezed margin suggests discontent is travelling from council chambers to ballot boxes.
