Labour MP suspended over Covid loan questions
Crossbencher Newsdesk

Labour has suspended MP Bayo Alaba pending an investigation into questions surrounding a taxpayer-backed Covid loan. The BBC reports the suspension follows queries about a bounceback loan scheme advance. The Independent and Daily Express carry the story, with GB News putting a figure on it.
The bounceback scheme was launched during the pandemic to keep businesses afloat - low-interest loans of up to a set maximum, underwritten by the Treasury. The scheme was fast-tracked to get cash out quickly; the trade-off was lighter verification. Multiple outlets reported high fraud rates at the time.
The suspension is precautionary - an investigation isn't a verdict. What matters now is whether the investigation finds the loan was applied for properly, used for its stated purpose, and declared as required. The machinery here is the party's own process, not a criminal inquiry; Labour has moved quickly to hold its own record.
Watch for the investigation's conclusion and whether any findings are referred onward. The loan scheme closed years ago, but the accounting continues.
