The meeting marks one of the few direct engagements between American officials and Hamas leadership in recent years. Both outlets frame it as part of broader efforts to secure a ceasefire and hostage release deal that has repeatedly faltered. The BBC describes it as pushing a "Gaza peace plan"; the Independent notes the plan remains "stalled".

The machinery here is familiar: the Americans arrive, the parties meet, the deal is close, the deal collapses. What makes this meeting unusual isn't the substance - ceasefires have been nearly-signed before - but the messenger. Kushner's previous Middle East involvement produced the Abraham Accords, a framework that bypassed Gaza entirely. Hamas wasn't party to those agreements. That the same envoy now sits across from Hamas suggests either a revised American calculus or a recognition that the bypass route has run its course.

Hamas took control of Gaza in a June 2007 battle with Fatah, a fact that has shaped every negotiation since. The organisation has governed the strip for nearly two decades; any durable settlement requires its consent or its removal. The Accords sidestepped that question. This meeting doesn't.
