Jason Arday plagiarism claims leave James O'Brien feeling 'like a mug'

The broadcaster James O'Brien says he feels like a mug for defending the academic Jason Arday, according to the Daily Mail. Arday, Britain's youngest ever Black professor when appointed to Cambridge in 2023, now faces plagiarism allegations that have prompted the university to launch an investigation.

The Mail reports that a newly surfaced book proposal claims Arday survived a car accident, locked-in syndrome and testicular cancer. The Express says the affair has humiliated the establishment that championed him. O'Brien, who previously praised Arday's appointment as a corrective to institutional racism, has now reversed his position publicly.

The word doing work here is "woke" - the Express frame treats the collapse of Arday's reputation as vindication against diversity appointments. That category error is worth naming. Plagiarism, if proven, is an academic standards question, not a diversity question. The two can be separated cleanly: it's possible to want more working-class academics from non-traditional backgrounds and also to want them to write their own work.

Cambridge's investigation will establish the facts. Until then, the useful question isn't whether diversity efforts were misguided, but whether the vetting was. Appointing someone is a bet on their record. If the record doesn't stand scrutiny, the failure is in checking it - not in who the appointment was trying to reach.
