A newly surfaced book proposal by Cambridge professor Jason Arday claims he survived an 'unrecoverable' car accident, locked-in syndrome and testicular cancer, the Daily Mail reports. The claims appear in material that has emerged as Arday faces plagiarism allegations over his academic work.

James O'Brien, the LBC presenter, has said he feels 'like a mug' for defending Arday against the plagiarism accusations. The Daily Express argues the case has 'humiliated our woke establishment'; the Daily Mail's Boris Johnson column describes the Cambridge academics who elevated Arday as 'the REAL racists here' for what he terms cynical use of Arday 'for their own selfish ends'.

The expanding claims raise a question about the incentive structure in institutional anti-racism work. When a biography becomes a credential - when surviving enough hardship or meeting enough identity categories grants professional advancement - the pressure to furnish that biography grows. The word doing work here is 'lived experience', which in practice means a story that can't be challenged without accusation. A story that can't be checked is one that will eventually be gamed.

The test case arrives when the plagiarism allegations are resolved and the biographical claims are verified or refuted. If the institutions that elevated Arday face no consequence for the vetting failure, the incentive structure remains intact.
