Iran has launched strikes on US military bases across the Middle East, following American attacks on Iranian oil tankers and what Tehran says was a wedding party. The Independent reports Trump threatened "much harder" strikes before the Iranian response came.

The exchange marks a sharp escalation. Trump's administration hit Iranian vessels and at least one civilian target; Iran's Revolutionary Guard answered with strikes on American positions in the region. Multiple Independent reports describe panicking Trump aides attempting to pause the conflict ahead of midterm elections, fearing electoral damage from an unpopular war.

The category error here is treating this as a crisis that arrived last week. Every American administration since Carter has promised to manage Iran and avoid entanglement; every one has found the logic of escalation pulls harder than the logic of restraint. The difference this time is the speed - previous administrations took months to reach this point. Trump's team has done it in days.

Watch whether the strikes pause before the midterms, and whether Congress moves to limit presidential war powers. If neither happens, the war has its own momentum and the election calendar will not stop it.
