Growth slows as pump prices rise and Iran war drags on
Crossbencher Newsdesk

UK economic growth has slowed as fuel prices climb and the conflict with Iran enters its second year, outlets reported today. The Independent says gas prices have hit their highest mark ever for mid-August as the war drags on. The Sun reports Chancellor John Healey has been warned by voters to keep the fuel duty freeze in place as pump prices soar. The Mirror says Healey has been given a grim Iran war warning as growth slows.
Fuel duty has been frozen at the same rate for over a decade. The freeze costs the Treasury billions annually in foregone revenue, but remains politically untouchable - every Chancellor inherits it and every Chancellor extends it. The mechanism is a ratchet: once frozen, any restoration becomes "a tax rise", regardless of inflation or the fiscal position. The Sun's framing - voters warning the Chancellor to keep the freeze - captures the bind. The policy is now older than some of the voters defending it.

The Iran war is the variable the Treasury can't model. The Independent's gas price figure reflects a supply shock no domestic policy can answer. The question for Healey is whether growth slows enough to force a choice between the freeze and the sums. Watch the Autumn Statement. If the freeze holds, the gap widens. If it breaks, the politics are ugly and the decision wasn't his.
