Germany braces for far-right AfD to enter power for first time

Germany faces what the Independent calls a "political earthquake" as the far-right Alternative für Deutschland eyes its first taste of power. The Daily Mail reports anti-immigration parties have stormed from the fringes and are now poised to take office for the first time since the Nazi era.

The AfD has been polling strongly in eastern German states, where dissatisfaction with immigration policy and economic stagnation has driven support for parties the mainstream once dismissed. The language matters: the Mail's framing - "first time since the Nazi era" - collapses eighty years into a single category, as if every right-wing party in Germany carries the same inheritance. The AfD is not the NSDAP, and the Federal Republic is not Weimar. The party is under surveillance by the Verfassungsschutz, Germany's domestic intelligence service, in some states for suspected extremism, but it remains legal and on the ballot.

The machinery is this: Germany's federal system means a state-level breakthrough does not grant national power, but it does grant legitimacy and a platform. The question for the established parties is whether to cordon sanitaire the AfD out of coalitions - the current posture - or whether electoral arithmetic will eventually force a deal. France's cordon held for decades until it frayed; Belgium's held longer. Germany's is being tested now.

The next date is the next state election. That will show whether the AfD's rise plateaus or continues, and whether the other parties hold the line or crack.
