German far-right heads for historic win in eastern state
Crossbencher Newsdesk

The Alternative for Germany is set for a significant victory in a crucial eastern state election, according to exit polls reported by the BBC and The Independent.
Both outlets describe the result as historic. The AfD, classified by German domestic intelligence as a suspected extremist organisation in some states, has polled strongly in the former East Germany throughout the past decade, but a win at state level marks a new threshold. The Independent frames it as a breakthrough; the BBC as confirmation of long-running trends in the region.

The pattern is European, not German. Far-right parties have moved from the fringe to government across the continent - Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland - and Germany, which spent the postwar decades as the exception, is now the rule. The eastern states have lower immigration, higher unemployment, and a living memory of being governed by people who arrived from the west with instructions. The vote is not only about migration policy; it is about who decides, and whether the federal consensus still holds.
Germany has no cordon sanitaire in law, but it has one in practice: the centrist parties have refused to govern with the AfD, even where the arithmetic requires it. That position works until it doesn't. If the exit polls hold and no coalition can be formed without the AfD, the choice is fresh elections, a minority government, or the end of the cordon. Each option has been tried elsewhere in Europe. None of them stopped the drift.
What to watch: the final seat count, and whether the centrist parties attempt a grand coalition to lock the AfD out, or whether one of them breaks ranks. Germany has spent eighty years as the country that learned the lesson. The test is whether the lesson still applies when the voters have moved on.
