German far-right heads for historic win in eastern state

Both outlets describe the result as historic. The AfD, classified by German domestic intelligence as a suspected extremist organisation in some states, has polled strongly in the former East Germany throughout the past decade, but a win at state level marks a new threshold. The pattern is European, not German. Far-right parties have moved from the fringe to government across the continent - Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland - and Germany, which spent the postwar decades as the exception, is now the rule.
