FIFA scraps World Cup investment plan after backlash and UEFA boycott threat
The Crossbencher Newsdesk

FIFA has abandoned its controversial proposal to sell future World Cup broadcasting and commercial rights in a single upfront deal, following a backlash that brought UEFA to the brink of a boycott. President Gianni Infantino admitted the plan "created divisions" and said he now hopes to "unite football again".
The BBC reports the proposal has been scrapped entirely. The Daily Mail notes Infantino made an "embarrassing U-turn" after the plan drew opposition from European football's governing body and member associations. The Independent reports that Donald Trump, when asked about the matter, gave a curt denial of any involvement in discussions with Infantino.
The mechanics are instructive. FIFA proposed to exchange decades of future income for immediate liquidity - a structure that works brilliantly for the seller if the asset is undervalued, and catastrophically for the buyer if it is not. The fact that UEFA, which runs the most commercially successful continental competition in the sport, opposed the deal suggests the valuation was optimistic. When an organisation that depends on consensus tries to force through a financial restructuring without it, the question is not whether it fails but how long the attempt lasts.
What to watch: whether this marks the end of Infantino's appetite for financial engineering, or simply a pause until the next idea. The PM's call for his resignation, reported by the Daily Mail, suggests the political cost may outlast the proposal.
