Farage wins Clacton by-election as watchdog resumes probe into financial gifts

Nigel Farage has won the Clacton by-election, but the parliamentary standards watchdog has resumed its investigation into financial gifts declared by the Reform UK leader, according to the Guardian and Daily Express. The probe had been paused during the campaign and restarted within hours of the result.

Count Binface, the satirical candidate, received close to ten thousand votes in the contest, the BBC reports. The Sun and Independent carried the full results breakdown. Meanwhile, the Mirror reports that Farage claimed police had advised him not to attend the count in person, but officers subsequently disputed that account. Reform UK chairman Richard Tice told the Daily Express his party holds evidence of a threat to Farage but won't hand it to police.

The discrepancy over police advice is the kind of claim that usually travels one way - from the politician outward - until someone checks with the force. When both versions are on the record within hours, the gap itself becomes the story. By-election wins are temporary; investigations into financial declarations tend to move more slowly, and this one has now formally restarted. The watchdog's remit covers whether gifts were properly declared under parliamentary rules, not whether accepting them was wise.

What to watch: whether the standards investigation publishes findings before the next general election, and whether Farage's majority in Clacton holds under a second contest if the boundary changes or a recall petition materialise.
