Farage wins Clacton but skips his own count - Reform says threats kept him away

Nigel Farage has held his Clacton seat but refused to attend the declaration, citing what his party calls credible threats. The Independent reports he boycotted the announcement and cancelled a planned victory speech. Reform's chairman Richard Tice claims the party has evidence of the threat but won't hand it to police, according to the Express.

Count Binface, the novelty candidate who stood against Farage, told the BBC he was "gratified" to be present at the declaration and later declared himself "the winning candidate who bothered to turn up", with the Independent reporting Binface saw record support. The count proceeded without the winning candidate - a rare sight in British electoral practice.

The absence frames Reform's next problem. The Sun notes beating Binface was the easy part; the real challenge is fixing the party's internal cracks and taking the fight to Prime Minister Andy Burnham. A by-election won on a walkover isn't the same as a contested mandate, and a leader who can't stand on stage to accept the result hands his opponents the line that he governs from a distance. Farage has held the seat since the general election - this was a by-election triggered by procedural circumstances, not a change of hands.

What to watch: whether Farage returns to the Commons chamber, and whether Reform publishes the evidence Tice says it holds. A threat serious enough to skip the count but not serious enough to report sits oddly. The country will judge him on what he does with the seat, not on how he won it.
