Farage under investigation over crypto donation ahead of Clacton by-election
Crossbencher Newsdesk

Nigel Farage says he would still accept a multi-million-pound cryptocurrency donation despite an ongoing investigation, as voters in Clacton prepare for a by-election. The Sun reports Farage defending the donation; The Guardian's Rafael Behr argues the nationalist tide can now be turned, describing Farage as "trapped and rattled".
The crypto question isn't incidental. Political donations in Britain must be transparent and traceable - the Electoral Commission exists to enforce that rule. Cryptocurrency by design obscures both. A donation that can't be traced to a permissible UK source is unlawful, regardless of the sum or the recipient's intentions. The investigation turns on whether the donor meets the legal threshold, not on whether Farage likes the money.

Behr's column leans on mood - Farage rattled, the tide turning - but by-elections aren't tides. They are datapoints, and Clacton has returned Farage before. The question is whether the investigation changes enough minds in a seat that knows exactly what it's voting for when it votes for him. Investigations don't always move voters; sometimes they entrench them.
What to watch: the by-election result, and whether the Electoral Commission publishes findings before polling day. If Farage holds the seat under investigation, the "rattled" framing will need revising.
