Nigel Farage has told the BBC he "wasn't listening" during undercover footage that captured senior Reform UK figures discussing access and influence with apparent foreign donors. The party leader said he expects "many more investigations" into Reform UK amid the continuing fallout.

The BBC reports Farage made the claim about not listening to conversations filmed during what appears to have been donor meetings. GB News quotes the Reform leader warning that Britain is "going bust" without tax cuts and growth, while the party suspended two aides following the revelations. The Independent notes Farage anticipates further scrutiny as the donations row continues to overshadow Reform's conference.

The "I wasn't listening" defence marks new ground in British political scandal management. When a party leader acknowledges being present during conversations about donor influence but claims inattention, he concedes the room but contests the participation. That is a narrower defence than denying the meeting happened - and a riskier one, because it relies entirely on the absence of footage showing him engaged. The claim invites the question: if he wasn't listening then, what else isn't he listening to now?

What to watch: whether further recordings emerge showing Farage's level of engagement during the filmed conversations, and whether the Electoral Commission widens its investigation beyond the two suspended aides to examine the party's donor vetting procedures.
