Nigel Farage has won the Clacton by-election, defeating novelty candidate Count Binface after every other major party chose not to field candidates. The Guardian reports the contest was boycotted by Labour, the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats. The Independent describes the margin as "convincing", though the absence of serious opposition makes comparison to normal by-elections impossible.

Farage didn't attend the count, with The Sun reporting he cited "threats" as the reason for his absence. He declared victory before the official result was announced. The BBC notes questions remain about his finances despite the electoral success.

The machinery here is worth watching. A by-election usually involves at least three parties contesting the seat - that's how the system tests whether an MP still commands local confidence when the arithmetic at Westminster has shifted. This one had none. The other parties stepped back, and the result tells us nothing about whether Farage's vote would hold under normal conditions or whether the seat remains Reform UK's without him on the ballot.

By-elections exist to fill a vacancy and to signal whether the national mood has moved since the last general election. Clacton now does neither - Farage is returned, but the test didn't run. The next general election, where all parties will stand, remains the only measure that counts.
