Farage faces donations inquiry as Reform conference meets security threat
Crossbencher Newsdesk

Nigel Farage told his party conference that counter-terror police had blocked his speech amid a security scare, as Reform UK confronts questions over party funding.
The Guardian, the Independent and others report that Cambridge University has launched a probe into James Orr following a donations sting. Farage described the row as a "hard-Left smear campaign", according to the Sun, while the Express urged the party to "spare the pearl clutching" and noted funding scandals are hardly unique to Reform. Hecklers caused chaos during the leader's address.
The real question is category. Every party attracts money that wants something, and every party has at some point been embarrassed by where it came from. The difference is usually who asks the questions and when. A donations scandal that lands during a conference is either very bad timing or very good opposition research. Either way, it forces the party to spend the weekend talking about compliance instead of policy.
Meanwhile Farage announced plans to recruit deportation officials and signed a pact with France's Jordan Bardella on returning migrants. The party's pitch - stop the boats, secure the border - now competes for attention with the funding story. Whether the donations inquiry proves substance or distraction will depend on what the investigation finds, not on what the conference says about it.
