Nigel Farage is standing in a by-election in Clacton, where the Independent reports his popularity is plummeting and voters are losing faith. The same outlet notes a record number of candidates, including Count Binface, are standing in what it calls a crunch vote.

Clacton has form: it was the seat Douglas Carswell won for UKIP after defecting from the Conservatives, the first MP elected under that party's banner. Farage holds it now for Reform UK, the successor vehicle. A by-election tests whether the insurgent brand still moves voters or whether the novelty has worn through.

The house angle: every British insurgency peaks, then discovers it cannot govern at scale and slowly becomes the thing it replaced. UKIP did it. The SDP did it before them. Reform is at the stage where it must show it can hold seats under scrutiny, not just win them on a protest vote. Clacton will tell you whether Farage is still the draw or whether the voters have moved on.

What to watch: the swing. A hold with a reduced majority suggests the ceiling; a loss suggests the floor. Either way, this is the test of whether Reform can survive its own success.
