A drone carrying an explosive device was discovered near the runway at a German airport, police confirmed today. The device was found at what both the BBC and the Independent report as a commercial airport, though neither outlet has named the location.

German authorities have not yet attributed the drone to any group or stated whether it was operational. The incident marks the latest in a series of drone-related security breaches at European transport infrastructure since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.

The discovery raises questions about airspace security protocols across the continent. Commercial airports operate under strict no-fly zones, yet small drones remain difficult to detect and intercept. Germany hosts significant NATO infrastructure and has been among Ukraine's largest military supporters - factors that have elevated the country's threat assessment since 2022.

What to watch: whether German authorities identify the drone's origin and operator, and whether other European airports adjust security procedures in response.
