Emergency alert sent to millions as government bans disposable barbecues
Crossbencher Newsdesk

Millions of phones across England and Wales sounded an emergency alert warning of a very high wildfire risk. The government-issued alert startled residents, with GB News reporting panic as sirens blared without prior warning.
The alert coincided with a temporary nationwide ban on the sale of disposable barbecues, which the government said posed a significant risk to the public during the current heatwave. The Mirror, the Mail and GB News all carried the ban, attributed to wildfire conditions.

The Prime Minister warned that Britain is a tinderbox. The Guardian and the Independent both quoted Andy Burnham using that exact phrase as he scrambled to respond to wildfires gripping the country. The emergency alert system - introduced to warn the public of imminent danger - has been used sparingly since its launch. Its deployment for a weather-related risk, rather than a terror incident or coastal flood, marks a shift in how the state reaches the population's pocket.
Watch what follows if the heatwave breaks without major incident: whether the alert system's credibility survives a warning that felt, to many, like overreach. And whether the barbecue ban lifts quietly or becomes the template for future summers.
