Conservatives pledge ban on foreign nationals in social housing

The Conservative Party has announced plans to bar foreign nationals from accessing council housing in Britain, with Helen Whately saying the policy would ensure "British families always come first".

The BBC and the Mirror report that the proposal would end eligibility for social housing among non-citizens. The Mirror warns the move "would leave families at risk of homelessness", while the Mail carries Whately's framing that British families should take priority. The policy appears designed to draw a line on allocation - who gets a claim on scarce public goods, and in what order.

The machinery here is allocation, not supply. Council housing waiting lists are long because successive governments built too little, not because the wrong people applied. A ban changes who queues; it does not shorten the queue. The question the policy answers is consent - whether the electorate gets a say in who may claim public provision - rather than capacity. That is a defensible question to ask, but it solves a rationing problem, not a building one.

What to watch: whether any party commits to building at the rate required to clear the waiting lists, or whether the fight remains over who gets the scarce stock that exists.
