Clacton votes as Farage fights by-election triggered by his own defection

Clacton goes to the polls today in a by-election caused by Nigel Farage's defection from his own seat to Reform UK. The Independent reports Count Binface is standing against him; a poll suggests the novelty candidate would win if all Britons could vote, though only Clacton residents actually can.

The Guardian's headline calls Clacton "a human zoo". The Daily Express says Andy Burnham's handling of the contest proves Farage is "far from done". GB News reports Farage attended Ann Widdecombe's funeral yesterday and paid tribute to her as "extraordinary".

Meanwhile, GB News says a proposed pact between Reform UK and Restore Britain is off, with Reform insider Rupert Lowe confirming "a genuine attempt at offer was made" to Farage but didn't proceed.

The peculiarity here is constitutional. A sitting MP defecting to another party doesn't automatically trigger a by-election - only resignation or expulsion does. Farage resigned his seat to force this contest, meaning Clacton voters are being asked to re-elect him under a different banner at public expense. The precedent is unusual: an MP choosing the timing and terms of his own re-election mid-Parliament.

The result will show whether the seat follows the man or the party - and whether a voluntary by-election, called by the incumbent to ratify his own defection, becomes a route others attempt. If it works, the mechanism is now proven.
