Polls opened this morning in the Clacton by-election, where Nigel Farage faces a record number of candidates - including Count Binface, the novelty candidate who has become a fixture of British electoral theatre.

The Guardian, the Independent and the Mirror all cover the contest. The Independent notes the size of the field and asks whether Count Binface could deliver an upset; the Mirror frames the race as a stunt that can't make an ongoing investigation disappear. The Guardian and the Independent track the polling and the timing of the result.

The framing tells the story. A by-election in a seat Farage won less than two years ago ought to be procedural - a resignation, a successor, done. Instead it has drawn the full circus: novelty candidates, front-page coverage, the word 'stunt' deployed by multiple outlets. When an election becomes about whether it's a stunt, the stunt has already succeeded. The question is no longer who wins Clacton; it's what Farage wants the win to mean, and whether the country is still listening.

Watch the margin. A narrow hold plays differently to a landslide; a loss would rewrite the script entirely. The result will tell us whether Farage still commands his old constituency, or whether the act has aged.
