Counting is underway in Clacton tonight after polls closed on the by-election triggered by Nigel Farage's elevation to the Lords. The Reform UK leader, who won the seat at the general election, is defending it against a field that includes Count Binface.

The Guardian frames the vote as "decisive but arguably empty", while GB News calls it "people vs establishment". The Mirror notes it as a "bin fight", referring to the novelty candidate. The range of framings itself is the story - the same vote described as epic, trivial, or symbolic depending on who is telling it.

The by-election exists because Farage accepted a peerage rather than serve a full term in the Commons. That's the machinery at work: a seat won under one promise, vacated for another institution, defended on a third argument. The precedent is ordinary - leaders take peerages, trigger by-elections, and usually win them back - but the framing battle around it's louder than usual. The question tonight is whether the seat stays Reform or returns to one of the parties Farage spent a career pulling votes from.

What to watch: the declaration, expected in the early hours. If Farage holds Clacton, the argument moves to whether Reform can convert media presence into a ground operation capable of winning seats it doesn't already hold. If he loses it, the peerage looks like the exit it was accused of being.
