Nigel Farage is making a final push to reclaim his Clacton seat in a by-election that has drawn national attention, facing opponents including novelty candidate Count Binface. The Guardian describes the contest as having turned Clacton into a "human zoo", while the Independent reports that a poll suggests Count Binface would defeat Farage if all Britons could vote in the by-election.

The Express argues that Farage is "far from done" and cites what it calls Prime Minister Andy Burnham's "cowardly dithering" as evidence. GB News reports that Farage paid tribute to Ann Widdecombe on the day of her funeral, calling her "extraordinary". Meanwhile, GB News also reports that a potential pact between Reform UK and Restore Britain has fallen through, with Reform UK insiders confirming the deal is off despite what Rupert Lowe described as a "genuine attempt at offer".

Elsewhere, the Prime Minister addressed a different matter entirely: the Mirror reports that Andy Burnham says disposable barbecues could be banned to help prevent wildfire risk. The juxtaposition is the story - a former mayor turned prime minister warning about garden fires on the same news cycle as a by-election featuring a satirical aristocrat in a bin-shaped helmet. The machinery of state runs on two tracks at once.

What to watch: the Clacton by-election result, which will tell us whether Farage reclaims the seat and whether the novelty candidacy made any material difference. The wildfire prevention proposal will require legislation if it proceeds beyond announcement.
