Burnham weighs tuition fee rise and North Sea drilling decision

The Prime Minister faces accusations over two separate policy directions this week. GB News and The Independent report claims that Andy Burnham is considering raising university tuition fees, which opposition figures have called a "staggering hike". The Sun separately reports that the government is "set to give green light" to new North Sea gas drilling this month.

The tuition fee story carries no figures in the headlines captured - the outlets describe the rise as significant but do not state the proposed level. The North Sea drilling decision would mark a reversal of Labour's historical position on fossil fuel extraction, though the timeline and scale of any new licences remain unspecified.

The juxtaposition is the story. A government arriving with a promise to serve working people now contemplates making university more expensive for their children while opening the taps on gas extraction the climate lobby opposes. Both moves answer a constraint: the first fills a hole in university funding without touching general taxation; the second acknowledges that Britain still burns gas and imports most of it. The question is whether either decision serves the people who voted for change, or whether both serve the Treasury and the grid at the expense of the manifesto.

The North Sea decision is expected this month. The tuition fee proposal has no confirmed date. Either would define how Burnham's government is remembered by the young and the old coalitions that put him in Downing Street.
