The Prime Minister is set to approve the Jackdaw gas field project in the North Sea within weeks, according to the Mirror and GB News. The field lies in the central North Sea and has been awaiting government sign-off since the previous administration.

The move marks a shift from Labour's election positioning on new oil and gas licensing. The Guardian and Express outlets frame the decision as part of a broader question about the government's direction - whether it represents a genuine departure from the last government or continuity under new management.

The machinery here is worth watching. Jackdaw is not a new discovery - it is an existing field requiring final approval to proceed. The decision sits with the Prime Minister rather than the Energy Secretary, which tells you how the government reads the politics. A field approval in the North Sea is an economic question - jobs, revenue, energy security - but it is also a signal about how far the manifesto survives contact with the Treasury's arithmetic and the grid's reality.

The test arrives this winter. If the lights stay on and bills fall, the approval will be judged by results. If neither happens, the question will be whether blocking the field would have made any difference - or whether the problem lies elsewhere in the system.
