Burnham says wealthy areas must take asylum seekers as crossings pass eighty thousand under Labour
Crossbencher Newsdesk

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has told wealthy parts of the country they must play their part in housing asylum seekers, after a leafy village revolted over plans for 1,250 arrivals. Speaking to GB News, he said the government can't commit to stopping the small boats crisis by 2029.
The Daily Mail reports more than 3,000 migrants arrived in just 22 days, with the total number crossing under Labour now topping 80,000. The Express carries Burnham's call for "all parts of the country" to provide homes. GB News reports the Prime Minister's acknowledgement that the boats may continue for years.

The proposal to spread asylum housing beyond traditional clusters raises the old machinery question: who decides, and by what consent. Burnham's language - "must play their part" - carries the weight of instruction rather than invitation. The pattern is familiar: a central directive meets local resistance, and the instruction becomes sharper. The question is whether the instruction reaches the ballot box or whether it's deemed too operational for politics.
What to watch: whether the government names the wealthy areas it expects to comply, and whether any council refuses. Resistance at council level has historically forced retreat or primary legislation. The next small boats numbers will settle whether 80,000 is a plateau or a waypoint.
