Burnham's migrant housing plan faces council revolt
Crossbencher Newsdesk

Andy Burnham is bracing for a rebellion from right-leaning councils over his "play your part" plan to distribute asylum seekers across local authorities, GB News reports. The Daily Mail quotes Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative leader, saying the policy proves Burnham will "betray those who don't back Labour". A Daily Express poll found fewer than one in ten people support the controversial measure.
The plan asks councils to accept a share of asylum seekers awaiting decisions, framed as a collective responsibility. GB News also reports a separate proposal - floated but not adopted - to let retirees "sacrifice" state pensions in exchange for honours such as OBEs, a suggestion that drew immediate ridicule.

The machinery is revealing. Burnham's government inherited a backlog of asylum cases and accommodation costs running into the billions. The "play your part" framing attempts to distribute the cost - and the political risk - across councils rather than concentrating it in coastal towns or urban Labour strongholds. But the framing assumes consent where none exists: councils have no legal obligation to comply, and those facing electoral pressure from voters opposed to the policy have every incentive to refuse.
What to watch: whether any councils openly defy the request, and whether the government follows with legislation to compel compliance. The difference between a request and a mandate is the entire political question.
