Burnham pressed on asylum, water bills and pensioners - all in one morning

Three unrelated policy areas landed on the Prime Minister's desk this morning, if the papers are any guide. The Daily Express reports Burnham is being asked to cheer an asylum policy nobody voted for, and says he is angry about water bills but doing nothing. GB News has him warning water companies against treating customers like a blank cheque.

Meanwhile, a Labour-backing pressure group has declared the immigration policy an abject failure, according to the Independent. The same group is urging Burnham to let rich pensioners opt out of the state pension in exchange for an OBE, and proposing speed limits and a doubled cost for second homes among its recommendations for the first hundred days.

The word doing work here is 'pressure group'. It's Labour-aligned, but not Labour. It can say what a backbencher can't - that the policy has failed - without binding the frontbench to the claim. The device is older than the parties: float the difficult argument through a friendly outside voice, gauge the reaction, adopt or disown as required. The pensioner-OBE proposal is almost certainly in the second category.

The clustering of unrelated topics - asylum, water, honours, speed limits - suggests a slow news day being filled with briefings. The question is whether any of it moves. Watch the Commons order paper for asylum or water amendments, and ignore the rest.
