Andy Burnham is being pressed from several directions in his opening weeks at Number Ten. GB News reports that the mother of PC Andrew Harper has made a direct plea to the Prime Minister over the early release of her son's killers, urging him to "rapidly expand prison capacity". The Mirror says he is being urged to "step up" on child poverty as families struggle through the summer holidays.

Meanwhile, a British farmer has told GB News that Burnham's farming support package comes "too late" after the driest July on record. The package was announced in response to drought conditions affecting yields across England. The Mirror contrasts Burnham's activity in office with Nigel Farage, saying that "while Nigel Farage argued with a bin, Andy Burnham got to work improving people's lives".

Burnham also issued a statement calling for "a moment of reflection" following the death of Jason Arday, according to GB News. The cluster carries no detail on the circumstances.

The competing demands illustrate the familiar bind of office: every constituency wants action now, and none will wait for another to be served first. Prison capacity, child welfare and agricultural resilience each carry a genuine claim - and a vocal lobby. The test for any new administration isn't whether it can please all three, but whether it can sequence the decisions so that solving one doesn't make the others worse.

What to watch: the autumn spending review, which will show where the new government's priorities actually lie when the choices have to be made in pounds rather than promises.
