Burnham faces demands on early release, tax and stamp duty in opening weeks
Crossbencher Newsdesk

The Prime Minister is fielding calls from multiple directions in his first weeks in office. GB News reports Conservative criticism of early release reforms, specifically concerning the killers of PC Andrew Harper. The BBC carries Burnham saying he is "confident" their early release can be halted.
The Express reports calls for Burnham to raise the personal tax allowance, while the Independent carries a housebuilder urging him to cut stamp duty to boost the housing market. GB News also reports pressure to scrap an unspecified "controversial tax".
Novara Media separately reports UK union bosses have written to Burnham asking Britain to stop assisting US operations against Iran.
The pattern is the usual one: a new government arrives, and every lobby with a grievance or a demand knows it has a narrow window before the diary fills and the favours are spent. The early weeks are when everyone asks; the rest of the term is spent explaining why the answer was no.
What to watch: whether Burnham moves on any of these asks, and which he chooses to address first. The order tells you the hierarchy.
