British drones strike targets inside Russia for the first time
Crossbencher Newsdesk

UK-made drones have been used by Ukraine to strike targets deep inside Russian territory for the first time, according to reports confirmed by the BBC and the Independent.
The attacks mark an escalation in the use of British military equipment in the conflict. Ukraine has launched what reports describe as hundreds of drones in recent operations, with some targeting what the Independent calls a 'Russian starlink' network. The BBC reports the strikes hit targets inside Russia itself, crossing a threshold that Western suppliers have navigated carefully since the invasion began.

The shift matters because it changes the geometry of accountability. When British equipment strikes Russian soil, the question of who is at war with whom becomes harder to answer with the language of proxy and support. Moscow annexed Crimea and invaded eastern Ukraine, but the British public hasn't voted on whether our drones should follow the fight onto Russian territory. The decision to supply was taken by ministers; the decision to deploy them beyond Ukraine's borders was taken in Kyiv. The gap between those two decisions is where the risk now lives.
Watch for Moscow's response - whether it distinguishes between Ukrainian use of British equipment and British involvement itself. The answer will tell us whether this remains Ukraine's war with British tools, or becomes something the other side will call ours.
