Argentina's president to address nation on Falklands after Trump remarks

Javier Milei, the President of Argentina, will deliver a televised address on the Falkland Islands after Donald Trump said the United States could "review" its stance on the issue, according to the Daily Mail and GB News.

The Daily Mail reports Milei will speak about the "sacred" status of the Falklands - the term Argentina uses to frame its claim to the islands as a matter of national dignity and territorial integrity, not negotiable interest. GB News carries the same framing. Trump's comment, made in the context of wider foreign policy remarks, appears to have given Buenos Aires an opening to press the claim at a moment when the US position might be in flux.

Britain has held the Falklands since the reassertion of sovereignty in January of that year. Argentina invaded in April; Britain retook the islands by mid-June. The war killed just under a thousand people and settled the question militarily, but Argentina has never renounced the claim. Every Argentine government since has called the islands "Las Malvinas" and treated recovery as unfinished business. Trump's willingness to "review" the US position - even as a passing remark - is the first suggestion in decades that Washington might not automatically back London.

Milei is not a revanchist by instinct; his presidency has been defined by radical economic liberalisation and alignment with the West. But no Argentine president can afford to be seen as weak on the Malvinas. The address will tell us whether Milei intends to press the claim seriously or simply to bank the political dividend of looking strong.
